IEEE 802.16's Session #71 was held on 10-13 January 2011 in Taipei. This Interim Session of the Working Group was sponsored by ITRI and MediaTek, with Global Mobile providing WiMAX-based network services. The Member Host was Ching-Tarng Hsieh (ITRI). Special gratitude is due to Tom Song and Ming-Chun Hsu for the outstanding arrangements. Many participants attended the 2011 Taipei WiMAX Summit on Monday morning; slide presentations from the conference were posted. The IEEE 802.21 Working Group co-located its interim session.
The attendance list includes 111 individuals.
Task Group m (TGm): Advanced Air Interface
Task Group m (TGm) met and completed resolution of comments in Sponsor Ballot of draft P802.16m/D10. As a result of the decisions, the editors will prepare P802.16m/D11, which the WG expects to be final draft and which will be the subject of a confirmation recirculation. The existing IEEE 802.16m Work Plan from 18 March 2010 remains accurate. If it continues to do so, TGm will not meet again. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.
GRIDMAN Task Group
The Working Group's GRIDMAN Task Group met to discuss activity under the P802.16n project. The project is amending IEEE Std 802.16 to provide for "Higher Reliability Networks." The WG agreed to adopt the 802.16n System Requirements Document IEEE 802.16n-10/0048, including the System Architecture Reference Model. Development of the P802.16n amendment draft began with an initial Table of Contents. A Call for Contributions will follow. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.
Machine-to-Machine Task Group
The new Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Task Group met to address the P802.16p project, which is amending IEEE Std 802.16 to provide "Enhancements to Support Machine-to-Machine Applications." Based on comment resolution, the 802.16p System Requirements Document IEEE 802.16p-10/0004 was updated. Development of the P802.16n amendment draft began with an initial Table of Contents. A Call for Contributions will follow. A initial response was developed to to liaison from the WiMAX Forum on a draft Machine to Machine Communications Requirements Specification. A closing report and minutes were issued.
Maintenance Task Group
The Maintenance Task Group addressed change requests and updated its database. It also drafted a response to a liaison statement from the WiMAX Forum. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.
WG Project Planning Committee
The WG Project Planning Committee met, reviewed contributions, and prepared a report. Revision of IEEE Std 802.16, consolidating the amendments into IEEE Std 802.16-2009, is expected to addressed soon. Activity to enhance the WirelessMAN-OFDMA air interface was discussed. A draft Hierarchical Network Study Report was updated, and an ad hoc group was initiated to progress the work.
The ITU-R Liaison Group met through the week and prepared a number of documents. For more details, see the ITU-R Liaison Group Report. Highlights include the following:
Working Group Issues
Scott Probasco resigned as WG Secretary. Erik Colban served as Acting Secretary of the Working Group at Session #71 and agreed to assume the role of WG Secretary on an ongoing basis.
Working Group Minutes
The Working Group Session #71 minutes are available as IEEE 802.16-10/0063.
The Session #71 Document Guide includes references to all session documents. Draft standards are available with a working group password or by purchase from IEEE-SA. About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® Standard for wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE 802.16 is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.
"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.
