IEEE 802.16 Session #86 Report
IEEE 802.16's Session #86 was held on 15-18 July 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. This Working Group (WG) plenary session was co-located with the IEEE 802 Plenary. The attendance list is posted.
Project P802.16q progressed with the refinment of the Amendment Working Document based on contributions discussed, with agreement to develope revision 2 of that document. A Call for Contributions was issued to request further input toward Session #88. A closing report and minutes were posted.
Meeting in its fourth session, Project P802.16r reviewed contributions and updated the Draft Architecture and Requirements document to Revision 3. The project developed a followup liaison statement to the Open Networking Foundation expressing views of the Working Group regarding Wireless OpenFlow. It also developed a liaison statement to the Small Cell Forum. Four teleconference meetings were scheduled. A Call for Contributions and a closing report were issued.
On a related issue, an IEEE 802 Tutorial on Wireless Software-Defined Networks (SDN) has been scheduled for 12 November in Dallas (18:00-19:30).
Project P802.16.3 developed a Call for Participation that was issued by IEEE-SA with an intent to encourage broader participation in the project, engaging technical experts from a variety of perspectives. The statement also announces that the project intends to use an electronic-based process that will allow participation without travel. An initial set of teleconferences has been scheduled, and a Call for Contributions has been prepared, including text specifying an intent to coordinate participants implementing measurement systems in accordance with the P802.16.3 architecture, per the revised IEEE 802.16.3 Architecture and Requirements for Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements working document. A closing report was issued.
The ITU-R Liaison Group drafted a contribution to ITU-R WP 5D. This was cleared through IEEE procedures for submission to ITU. The group also developed a an administrative document for ITU. A closing report was issued.
Project Planning Committee
The WG's Project Planning Committee did not meet.
The IEEE 802 OmniRAN EC Study Group, which originated in the IEEE 802.16 HetNet Study Group, held its fourth session. It was renewed through the November 2013 IEEE 802 Plenary; see details of the final report and renewal motion.
Working Group Minutes
The Working Group Session #86 Minutes will be posted when available.
IEEE 802 Executive Committee Actions

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® standards of IEEE 802.16 and 802.16.1 for wireless metropolitan area networks. It is also developing the IEEE 802.16.3 project on Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements. The IEEE 802.16 Working Group is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless network standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.
"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.
