IEEE 802.16 Session #90 Report
IEEE 802.16's Session #90 was held on 18 Mar 2014 in Beijing, China. This Working Group (WG) plenary session was co-located with the IEEE 802 Plenary. The registration list is posted.
The Working Group had scheduled an abbreviated session due to the unavailablility of many participants. The session comprised a single two-hour WG Plenary meeting. The WG Treasurer, Tim Godfrey, served as Acting Chair, in lieu of the WG Chair and WG Vice Chair, who connected by teleconference. The agenda included elections for the WG Chair and WG Vice Chair positions for a two-year term. The incumbent WG Chair and WG Vice Chair were re-elected by the WG. However, confirmation of those elections by the IEEE 802 Executive Committee was deferred until the July IEEE 802 Plenary. Followup teleconferences took place in April, May, and June 2014.
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group co-hosted a "Birds of a Feather" (BOF) meeting on Wireless SDN, inviting other IEEE 802 participants, this time hosting along with the IEEE 802 OmniRAN Study Group. The meeting was a second followup to the IEEE 802 Tutorial on Wireless SDN in Access and Backhaul presented to several hundred participants on 12 November 2013. The next such BOF meeting is planned for the July 2014 IEEE 802 Plenary.
IEEE 802 OmniRAN EC Study Group, which originated in the IEEE 802.16 HetNet Study Group, completed its work, as the IEEE-SA Standards Board authorized, on 27 March 2014, the new Project P802.1CF ("Network Reference Model and Functional Description of IEEE 802 Access Network"). The work will be developed within the new OmniRAN Task Group of the IEEE 802.1 Working Group.
Project P802.16q is completing the final editorial stages of its first draft. This will be subjected to review in Working Group Letter Ballot #39, with comment resolution scheduled for Session #92.
Project P802.16.3 continued its set of teleconferences.
In advance of its 24 April teleconference, it issued a a Call for Contributions regarding the IEEE 802.16.3 Architecture and Requirements for Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements working document.
A contribution to ITU-R WP 5D was drafted, approved by the WG at Session #90, and cleared through IEEE procedures for submission to ITU. The contribution will provide an update of toward Revision 12 of Recommendation ITU-R M.1457 (IMT-2000).
Working Group Minutes
The draft Working Group Session #90 Minutes were not subsequently approved by the Working Group, due to the lack of participation at the session. Working Group elections were scheduled to be repeated at Session #92. Other session decisions were confirmed in later Working Group actions.
Draft standards are available with a working group password or by purchase from IEEE-SA. Most IEEE 802.16 standards are available for free download via the Get IEEE 802® program. See the 802.16 publication list for details of published standards and drafts.
About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® standards of IEEE 802.16 and 802.16.1 for wireless metropolitan area networks. It is also developing the IEEE 802.16.3 project on Mobile Broadband Network Performance Measurements. The IEEE 802.16 Working Group is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless network standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.
"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.
